Occasionally we run into fiberglass bathtub shower units that For one reason or another had to be put together in sections, and the seams that join these sections sometimes leak or have other problems that need to be repaired if we are going to reglaze the bathtub. This us usually due to a space problem, or the old unit had to be cut out and there was no way to get a new unit in except in pieces.

There are a few things wrong with the bathtub/shower unit above besides just its appearance.  The seam is allowing water to pass through and end up on the floor. Re-caulking seems to have not helped and so we need a better solution.

This particular unit was put together by the owner to solve a space problem and it is a custom size but the joints were not designed to go with each other and the seam would not seal with caulking which is the usual solution for a problem like this.

In order To fully handle this it will be necessary to completely eliminate the seam. This situation does not come up every day but it does happen periodically and demands a solution that the owner can both live with and afford.

The first step is to thoroughly clean and sand the fiberglass surface, and then repair any imperfections with a plastic filler material and sanding it down resulting in a totally smooth surface.

After that this tub requires that we fill the seam in with a fiberglass bondo and then use a plastic filler to get a smooth surface once it is sanded. Once the surface is fully handled we reglaze it with an acrylic urethane Giving the whole bathtub a hard acrylic plastic surface.

The surface is warrantied for 5 years and is expected to last 5 to 10 years of normal use, as long as the care and maintenance instructions are followed. The paper is removed and is not part of the job.

Bathtub Refinishing

Probably bathtubs are the most frequent candidates for reglazing (refinishing or resurfacing).  Note this has not been surveyed, but it is an empirical observation of over 20 years of experience refinishing bathtubs in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

So lets start with how a bathtub is reglazed or refinished:

0.  The room is prepared with ventilation, and masking applied to surfaces to ensure no damage or permanent overspray on surfaces not being refinished.  Ventilation is by a ducted exhaust, providing a rapid removal of fumes from the space for safety reasons.  It is advised that all valuables be removed from the room ahead of time to help ensure no accidental loss or damage occurs.

1.  The surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any soap and dirt residue and any mineral build up or other contaminants.

2.  The porcelain surface is sanded and etched with a strong acid.  Acid etch is skipped by some refinishers as it is hazardous and not something that should be performed by inexperienced or untrained applicators.  But this step is required to create the best possible bond.  Fiberglass surfaces are simply prepared using abrasives since acid is not effective on plastic type surfaces.

3.  Any chips or cracks in the surface are repaired using fillers, or fiberglass resin in the case of a fiberglass fixture.  These repairs are sanded to a smooth even finish.

4.  Next we apply a two part bonding agent.  This step is also often skipped by other applicators, or used instead of the etching step.  Some times a “primer” is used by other companies as the only bond promoter available to them.  Our specially formulated bonding agent penetrates the surface and bonds chemically with the surface and our coating, providing a strong and permanent bond between the old surface and the new coating.  This bonding agent is so effective that etching, as in step 2 above, is technically an optional step, however we etch all porcelain surfaces AND use our boding agent to maximize the durability and permanence of our coating.

5.  The top coat we apply is a two part material that includes a catalyst.  The standard colors are white and almond but you can order any a custom color you want ahead of time. Once applied, the coating cures to a very had finish within 48 hours, and reaches full hardness in about a week.  We suggest being gentle the first week while the coating is still reaching a full cure.  There are additives we can use that significantly speed up the curing process, but these are used on an as-needed or requested basis.  If you need to use the surface the same day, tell this to the sales person or technician and he will modify the coating for a rapid cure.

The result is a smooth porcelain-like finish that is hard and durable.

Which Should You Do, Refinish Your Bathtub Or Re-glaze It?

A very common question that we get asked by people calling it to our office for the 1st time is, “what is the difference between Refinishing and Reglazing?”. The answer is quite simple, there isn’t one. The proper term is refinishing and sometimes resurfacing. While we are probably not totally responsible, when we changed the name of our company back in 1995 to Pacific Reglazing, the proper definition of reglazing would have been changing out windows on storefronts, since the glaser  is one who works on replacing windows, etc.. This still is the proper English definition, but somehow over the years it haBathtub reglazed in Pasadenas come to be a synonym of refinishing when used with reference to porcelain fixtures like bathtubs and sinks.

So essentially reglazing a sink, refinishing a sink and resurfacing a sink are just 3 ways to say the same thing, so don’t get stressed out trying to find the difference.

Pacific Reglazing Knows Kitchens and Baths

We have been doing this since 1991 and while at times we have added other services to our repertoire we have focused back on reglazing.  We refinish tubs, sinks,  counter tops, tile walls, cultured marble counters and tubs, Formica and other laminates, and many other Kitchen and bath surfaces. Whether you want your fixture re-glazed, refinished, or resurfaced we will be glad to help you out.

While we’ve done many Kitchen sinks over the years, it is always better to replace them if at all possible. This is due to the fact that they don’t stand up well to pots and pans, and unless they’re in a granite or a tile counter, where replacing them also requires damaging the counter, replacing them is always a better idea in the long run, Even if it costs a little more.
