Bathtub stains can be extremely difficult to clean up and remove, when a tub gets old and porus. Often times bathtubs will have dark black, yellow or rust stains that can ruin the look of your bathtub. The enamel of a bathtub is baked in so it is usually quite durable and non porous. This baked on coating allows for the use aggressive scrub pads without having to worry about damaging the finish of most bathtubs, but as the tub ages the glaze tends to get worn away by all this scrubbing.

One solution to the above problem is refinishing. Bathtub refinishing also known as bathtub resurfacing, bathtub reglazing or bathtub re enameling is the process of refreshing the surface of a worn, damaged bathtub to a like new condition. This process typically involves a thorough cleaning and repairing any damaged areas. Chips or cracks are repaired using Bondo or another type of polyester putty.

After repairs are made the surface is prepped with an acid etching, some new refinishing processes do not require the use of etching. After preparing the surface primer or bonding agent is applied, followed by a top coat. Generally, a synthetic white coating is applied, usually an acrylic urethane, but the coating does not have the durability or abrasive tolerance of the original glass enamel coating of a factory new bathtub.

For this reason you would no longer be able to use products such as Comet to clean the tub, and you would need to use a non-abrasive cleaner like Simple Green, Formula 409, or Scrubbing Bubbles.

Over the years bathtubs have had a variety of uses. One of these, however was not the assumed use of making bathtub gin. Bathtub gin refers to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. The term first appeared in 1920, in the prohibition era United States, in reference to the poor quality alcohol that was being made.

Bathtub Gin, AKA Railroad Gin, was often poisonous due to the lack of care that went into the making of it. Obviously, there was a very high demand for alcohol during prohibition, and people would often risk getting these poisonous varieties by buying them from non-reputable sources.

If one were to make gin in the bathtub it could be hard on the finish if the tub had been reglazed. However, one use of the bathtub, washing your car engine, is very hard on a refinished bathtub. Doing this will definitely void your warranty.

Routine normal use of the tub should give the tub an expected life of 5 to 10 years. Of course you would need to care for it properly and follow the care and maintenance instructions, which forbids washing your car engine, bleaching or dying clothing, or making bathtub gin, if you happened to have an old family recipe.

Bathtub Refinishing

Probably bathtubs are the most frequent candidates for reglazing (refinishing or resurfacing).  Note this has not been surveyed, but it is an empirical observation of over 20 years of experience refinishing bathtubs in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.

So lets start with how a bathtub is reglazed or refinished:

0.  The room is prepared with ventilation, and masking applied to surfaces to ensure no damage or permanent overspray on surfaces not being refinished.  Ventilation is by a ducted exhaust, providing a rapid removal of fumes from the space for safety reasons.  It is advised that all valuables be removed from the room ahead of time to help ensure no accidental loss or damage occurs.

1.  The surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any soap and dirt residue and any mineral build up or other contaminants.

2.  The porcelain surface is sanded and etched with a strong acid.  Acid etch is skipped by some refinishers as it is hazardous and not something that should be performed by inexperienced or untrained applicators.  But this step is required to create the best possible bond.  Fiberglass surfaces are simply prepared using abrasives since acid is not effective on plastic type surfaces.

3.  Any chips or cracks in the surface are repaired using fillers, or fiberglass resin in the case of a fiberglass fixture.  These repairs are sanded to a smooth even finish.

4.  Next we apply a two part bonding agent.  This step is also often skipped by other applicators, or used instead of the etching step.  Some times a “primer” is used by other companies as the only bond promoter available to them.  Our specially formulated bonding agent penetrates the surface and bonds chemically with the surface and our coating, providing a strong and permanent bond between the old surface and the new coating.  This bonding agent is so effective that etching, as in step 2 above, is technically an optional step, however we etch all porcelain surfaces AND use our boding agent to maximize the durability and permanence of our coating.

5.  The top coat we apply is a two part material that includes a catalyst.  The standard colors are white and almond but you can order any a custom color you want ahead of time. Once applied, the coating cures to a very had finish within 48 hours, and reaches full hardness in about a week.  We suggest being gentle the first week while the coating is still reaching a full cure.  There are additives we can use that significantly speed up the curing process, but these are used on an as-needed or requested basis.  If you need to use the surface the same day, tell this to the sales person or technician and he will modify the coating for a rapid cure.

The result is a smooth porcelain-like finish that is hard and durable.
