There are a few things wrong with the bathtub/shower unit above besides just its appearance. The seam is allowing water to pass through and end up on the floor. Re-caulking seems to have not helped and so we need a better solution.
This particular unit was put together by the owner to solve a space problem and it is a custom size but the joints were not designed to go with each other and the seam would not seal with caulking which is the usual solution for a problem like this.
In order To fully handle this it will be necessary to completely eliminate the seam. This situation does not come up every day but it does happen periodically and demands a solution that the owner can both live with and afford.
The first step is to thoroughly clean and sand the fiberglass surface, and then repair any imperfections with a plastic filler material and sanding it down resulting in a totally smooth surface.
After that this tub requires that we fill the seam in with a fiberglass bondo and then use a plastic filler to get a smooth surface once it is sanded. Once the surface is fully handled we reglaze it with an acrylic urethane Giving the whole bathtub a hard acrylic plastic surface.
The surface is warrantied for 5 years and is expected to last 5 to 10 years of normal use, as long as the care and maintenance instructions are followed. The paper is removed and is not part of the job.
